     (Q) Inexpensive MacroMind Director?
I'm hoping to find a package that does what MacroMind Director does
(specifically, create presentations that illustrate navigation of menus,
dialogs, etc. to be used as training for various software packages) but not as
hefty a chunk of change as MMD ($795 even through MacWarehouse!!!).  Does
anyone have a less expensive commercial package or even (*please* *please*
*please*) a shareware/PD package that might do something similar?  TIA!

Subject: Aldus PageMaker 5.0 and QMS PS 410 printer (Q)

Has anyone tried to use Aldus PageMaker 5.0 with a QMS PS 410 printer?

I got the PPD file from the distributor of QMS here in Switzerland, and
also the LaserWriter 8 printer driver.

However, There's something mysterious going on - instead of being able to
print, there is some instruction sent to the printer which it doesn't
understand.

(offending command: dtransform)

Second point is that the German language version of PageMaker 5.0 tries to
find a folder labeled "Druckerbeschreibungen", while LaserWriter 8 wants
one that is called "Printer Descriptions". I tried to make an alias of
Printer Descriptions with the German name, but then PageMaker reports that
this folder does not contain the necessary PPD files.

After switching back to PM 4.2 - I could no longer print as well, with the
"old" LaserWriter software. PrintMonitor says

rangecheck invalid: a4tray

which it did never before, all settings being the same and even the Aldus
folder in the System folder restored to it's state as it was before
installing version 5. Seems that PM 5 / LW 8 modify something in the
printer's parameters, but I did not yet find out what.

Any ideas ?  Thank you in advance.

Dear Netters,
I hear DiskExpress does defragmentation (from AlSoft) much like Norton's
SpeedDisk.  However, I have not yet seen DiskExpress in action.  Does it, or
any other FTP shareware/Commercial software do defragmentation in the
background?   I am looking for a program that will defragment my hard drive
every time I put something new on.  That way I won't have to wait half an
hour for SpeedDisk to do a complete defragmentation.
Running vanilla System 7 on a 68020/no FPU Macintosh LC w/10 MB of RAM.
If that matters in terms of compatibility with such programs.  I can afford up
to 3 MB of hard disk space for such a program.
This has become especially a problem now that I download many pieces of
software  to see if any make my system easier to use.

Subject: Apple's New Monitors (Q)

Apple seems to have recently released a number of new 14-inch monitors
into the European market, and possibly into the US market as well.
They replace the old 12-inch monitors that due to their non-swiveling
base can no longer be sold in Europe.  As far as I know, these new
monitors consist of the following:
  *  14-inch swivel mounted Philips monitor (possibly a VGA)
  *  14-inch swivel mounted monitor bearing Apple badge, but made by Philips

Has anyone had any experience of these yet?  How do they compare with
the exisiting Apple 14 inch Sony Trinitron monitor?  I've only seen the
one with the Philips badge and it looks uncommonly ugly.  Is the
Apple-badged one identical in shape or is it different.  What's the
display quality like?

I'm planning on buying an LC475 during the week so I'm anxious to find
out about the monitors before signing any cheques.

Friday, November 12, 1993



Is it possible to link an Apple IIe to Mac via modems? I attempted to send
a text file using communication software on an Apple called Proterm via a
modem to a Mac using White Knight communication software. I linked the two
modems together using a piece of phoneline. Had I been dialing across town

I am sure that I could have gotten it to work. But here the computer were
next to each other.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 I read in the November issue of Macuser that the newer version of the
Apple Modem Tool (1.5, apparently) addressed some of the problems that Macs
using the Communications Toolbox had with high speed modems.  However, I
haven't seen a newer version of AMT come across the net, and couldn't find
it at bric-a-brac.apple.com.  Does anyone out there in netland know if the
newer version exists, if it is available to the public, and if so, where I
could get my hands on it???

Hi,
  I have seen a Brother Inkjet printer really cheap, which has the advantage
of bein compatible with both Macintosh and P.C. Has anyone tried it?
I think the model is IN 440, but I am not sure about the letters. It looks
that is based on the same mechanism as the Stylewriter II. At least, the
cartridges look very similar.

Well, I am the author of ChunkJoiner, constantly behind in reading the
digest, now trying to reply.
When I designed ChunkJoiner I knew there were older concatenation
utilities running under older Systems (although I have not tried any
of them). So why wasting days - DAYS - in programming efforts, in
order to support System 6? If one uses System 6, he/she could just use an
older concatenation utility; I will not bite him/her for this.
But if you use System 7, be aware that (the following is taken from
the "read me" doc):
You will be asked for the name of the application which can open the
resulting file; I have added this because the Finder 7.x can read this
name and show it to the user if the application is not present.
You can launch ChunkJoiner multiple times in a networking environment,
as well as from a locked disk.
ChunkJoiner is intelligent enough to use temporary memory (if
available), so you do not have to get mad setting its memory
partition. Furthermore, it should work even if you have not enough
memory to read entirely the files you want to combine. If the System 7
virtual memory is active, ChunkJoiner cleverly optimizes its memory
allocation scheme in order to minimize the disk activity when joining
large files.

Do the older concatenation utilities behave this way under System 7?
Does a System 7 user need System 6 compatibility more than these
features?

I conclude:

I've learned that compuserve provides access to some US Census data
(STF1A and STF3A).  Is access available through any other online ser-
vice?  Does anyone have any recommendations regarding compuserve?

FYI:  compuserve costs $8.95/month for unlimited access to basic
services (NOT INCLUDING access to the census data).  For access to
extended services (INCLUDING access to the census data) an additional
$0.13/minute charge is applied.

Subject: DeskWriter/PaintWriter AppleTalk Problems

We are seeing network problems when multiple DeskWriters or PaintWriters get
on the same AppleTalk (LocalTalk) segment.  Users complain about being
dropped from fileserver connections and neverending printing to LaserWriters
on the same segment.

The HP printers are needlessly sending out many AppleTalk LAP enquire
packets to the router.  The garbage traffic created by the printers is
taking down the network during the busy times of the day.  Has anyone heard
of the same problem?  Does anyone know of a fix for the problem?

Another question I have about this concerns the issue of accountability.  If
this "network fax" option was implemented for a set of offices, how does it
keep track of who's sending faxes out over the network?  Does it print a
transmission report?  Is there a name on the transmission report as to who
sent
the fax?  I'm currently conducting a feasability study on providing a fax
service for a set of offices, but I'm concerned about the office that houses
the LW Select 360 will get socked with large fax bills, and I'd like to find
out how to make people accountable and responsible for what they send out.
Anyone have any input?

I downloaded FolderIcon.  Yes it is a drag-and-drop utility.  If you
drag something on it, it will make a folder on your desktop.  For
example, if I drag a WriteNow document on top of it, it will make a
folder on the desktop with a little WriteNow icon on the folder.

No, it is not an editor.

If you do not drag something on it and just double-click, it comes up
with an open dialog box.  Opening something will make a folder on the
desktop with a miniature icon of what you opened on the folder.

I threw this program away after I found out it made folders.  I will
stick with Iconder (also available at sumex, I think) which puts the
special miniature icon in the clipboard so that I can paste it onto an
existing folder.

I haven't used the fax software yet, but I'm guessing that it might not be
32-bit clean. This might not be the case, since the Express Modem software

I don't have the AV monitor (NEC 3FGe instead) and I use the microphone
that came with the 660AV (the Plaintalk Microphone) I would recommend
removing the AV Monitor's microphone cable and using the seperate
microphone connected to the microphone port. Mount the microphone on top
of the monitor. This should solve your problem, as I do this and have no
feedback, even at high volumes. Be careful though, the party on the other
end will hear you as if you are talking from the back of a tunnel, so get
closer to the microphone to speak, or raise your voice a little. Remember
also that the microphone is use is the Plaintalk one, not the one in your
monitor.

I hope that the upgrade will improve your performance. While I have not
experimented with the fax capabilities, I think that they should work with
your current system. You might want to find out if your university's phone
lines are true analog line, as the Geoport is very specific abou this.

If you have a CD-ROM drive, I have an answer. Open the Sound Control
Panel. Highlight Sound Input. Click Options. Check to make sure that the
Microphone is checked and playback is off. I've had this problem too when
switching from playing audio CD's on the drive to using the speech
recognition. Remember though that speech recognition requires LARGE
amounts of RAM. Turning it on for a brief period, using it to open files,
and then turing speech off often adds to your system heap (System Software
in the "About this Macintosh") I've even had to restart to open programs
which only require less that 1MB of RAM, so use speech recognition wisely.

To follow up on my previous posting, I purchased the HP 4MP from Printer's
Plus in Arlington, VA for $1385. They are an authorized HP dealer which
is required to qualify for the HP $100 rebate (good until Dec 31).  They
are one of the few companies that accept out-of-state mail orders which

Actually, the Eclipse 8 is based on proven hardware and software
technology.  The OL-810 engine that's used in the Eclipse 8 is the
same print engine that was used in the PLP IIS, BLP IIS, and BLP Elite
8, so it's been in field service for several years. That's one of the
reasons that GCC is able to offer a good price on the Eclipse: the
engine is inexpensive.

Another reason the Eclipse is inexpensive is that the hardware designers
have done a damn fine job in keeping the cost of the controller board down
by using readily-available, off-the-shelf components, and very few of them.

The PostScript interpreter in the Eclipse is the same PhoenixPage/PS
interpreter that's in the ColorTone and SelectPress printers; it costs
GCC less to use this interpreter than it costs to use Adobe, and once
again, the interpreter is a proven software model that's been in
service in several products, and which has been refined and improved
over time.

In other words: no, the Eclipse isn't too good to be true; it's just
an exceptionally good deal.

Is anyone desparate enough to use the following workaround? Do you have
a Radius Pivot monitor?

1. The Radius Pivot monitors work with or without the Radius software. Turn
off the Radius control panel, restart your Mac.

2. Open your word processor. Type a line. Rotate (pivot) the monitor. The
line of text is now either running on the right edge of your document (top to
bottom) or the left edge (bottom to top).

3. If you use Nisus in the right-to-left word processing mode then you can
have the line of text on the left of your document (running top to bottom).

4. Of course the characters are also rotated by ninety degrees...Do you have
a font conversion program? Can you produce a font with the characters also
rotated? If so, the modified characters could be read on the screen with
their usual orientation.

5. Print the document. Once the document is on paper, the reader would
not know that you had used a "left-to-right" word processor, the reader
would see a document foramtted with vertical text.

The down side of this method (flip side? :-) is that your mouse motion
wouuld be at ninety degrees to its normal orientation...also menus would
be displayed at the side of your screen, not the top.

But the "bottom line" is:

  How much do you need vertical typing on your Mac?

I was able to format a Word 4.0 document with 50 columns (no spacing).
This produces printing in columns. You may have to adjust the font size and
the number of columns.

Select the PAGE PREVIEW mode for the display in order to see multiple columns
on a single page...however, this slows the word processor considerably.

capabiility requires handling vertical printing on screen and paper. So
far, worldscript just ain't true.

    Questions start going in the right direction when they
consolidate interests for apple developing this capability. Several
languages of the world require this capability. That gets across the idea
that there might be a more general requirement than merely one language.
Let us go further in building a constituency or market base.
    Imagine if you will the following erroneous solution. Suppose you made
a font that was rotated left by 90 degrees. Then, it would print top to
bottom in what I believe is called landscape mode, but the columns would
go right to left. If the text edit manager could be coaxed into printing
>From right to left, then we could rotate the font the other way and get
the correct left to right column structure.
    So, with this example, we can see the generalization you would like
would involve being able to print Hebrew. We've added another country.
    But, toying with examples, we have almost seen something very important
and fundamental about what we are wanting to do, something I had someone in
Berkeley Systems do for a mac SE. He had done it for a lark and said not to
attribute it to their other virtual screen work.
    We called it 'headstand init'. It would have made my monitor show a mirror
image of what it should if only my mac were a mac SE. It was a quick hack for
fun by one nice employee. I had been making a mirrorless optical system to
project my mac screen on the mac side of the wall screen. The Berkeley
Systems fellow commented that using the mouse was nausiating in mirror
mode (it wasn't turned around backwards if you looked directly at the mirrored
screen).
    You don't need $10,000 video projection, just a dark adapted
audience (cheap solution for amateur astronomers I hang out with). But,
the increase of market base by adding amateur astronomers is not as
incredible as adding countries.
    Understanding the transformation Physics helps me find a more general
market than my first rather specialized interest. Let's say that the
potential market for mac computers are the same people who might buy a car
with a windshield (let's say a mac is 'wheels for the mind' like apple did
so long ago) :
    With the generalization (parity transformation in printer and screen
imaging) coupled with appropriately rotated fonts, you could make heads up
displays of road instructions for cars (reflect in windshield right way
around). I have been using such display on my windshield for years, but
with current printer driver I must produce big pict files and mirror
reverse them with my scanner software. It should be possible to have small
vector map files and print them backwards for heads up navigation in autos.

    Moral: true worldscript capability requires a parity (mirror)
transformation option on printer drivers. Quickdraw gx might allow a cheap
printer extension to do this. Its coming...from apple.

I've just took posession of LC475 and am impressed by its speed! I'm used
to an ageing MacII so almost anything would look fast. Just out of interest
I timed a drag and drop launch of an image file: Mac II took 1min 26 sec
the LC475 (8/120) 15 seconds.

However, in the UK it doesn't ship with a microphone and when I try the
mike that came with our Centris it doesn't work. My dealer isn't sure if it
only works with the plaintalk mike. Can anyone enlighten me? Does it ship
with a mike or the speech recognition software in the US? If it is a
hardware fault I want a logic board swap asap!

I just got the new MacTools 3.0 from CPS, and I found a bit of a glitch
in making an "emergency disk" that y'all might find useful to know about.
When MacTools creates a boot disk, for either DiskFix or Optimizer, it
puts an 834K or so system file on the floppy. This leaves precious few
K for enablers. I've been using the "stripped" System 7.1 (via the MIN-
SYSTEM-INSTALLER-101 in the archive) for such boot disks, 715K. Works
fine for the Optimizer boot disk. Works less fine for the "emergency"
disk containing DiskFix. Just as the DiskFix screen comes up, an alert
comes up saying that "an error has occurred." So far, I've just clicked
OK and continued the mission. With no apparent problem.

That alert did get my attention. But -- after too many hours looking at
it and trying to avoid it -- I've just decided that the "stripping" got
a system file that is missing something DiskFix asks about but does not
really need.

If any of you real experts out there see (1) reason to worry or (2) a way
around that alert, I'd very much like to hear of it.

I've been seeing a problem in MacWrite Pro. Before I yell at Claris, I'd
like to know if any of y'all have seen the same thing, or if I've simply
done something terribly stupid and deserve to die.

I have my "dates" set up to change when the document has been modified.
The first date in a letter is after the letterhead and right justified.
It can show on the screen, and print, with truncation. The last time I
wrote my "baby" sister was June. Yeah, don't rag on me. I'm a very bad
brother. Nonetheless, my letter of this evening got a first-page date
of "November 12" instead of "November 12, 1993" when I saved the letter.
Say what? The subsequent-page headers, with date left justified, looked
as expected.

Have any of y'all seen this on MWPro 1.0v4? If you haven't, what are you
doing that I'm not?

All suggestions most appreciated. I like MWPro's option of changing the
date automagically when the document changes, but I don't like the way
I see it does it.

If you were travelling from point A to point B directly, I would carry the
hard disk with you on the plane. Since you are visiting other places along
the way, backpacking and such, I would suggest not packing it with you and
instead, sending it via UPS or Fed Exp.

If you know someone at the place where you are going, ship it to them just
before you leave. If you don't, leave it with someone. Call them when you
arrive and tell them where to ship it. Two day shipping overseas is not
expensive so I'd suggest leaving it with someone.

I have backpacked with wierd stuff (Atmos Clock, Wool wall hangings) and
generally don't recommend it. You have to be extra careful that you and
others treat your backpack as a container of fragile stuff.

Explaining that my backpack contains an incredibly valuable object that
needs to be handled gently is not something I like to do when theft is a
very real possibility. Drawing attention to my backpack sounds to me like I
am saying, steal from me and win big.

peeps,

i remember reading here once someone saying how to do page references in MS
Word, however i dont remember what was said.  basically i tried using "paste
link" and pasting a hidden piece of text from one page to another.  the hidden
piece of text contained the reference including the page number by inserting
a page number symbol thingy. problem is that if i paste the link as full
format you get the symbol not the page number, and if i paste the link as
unformatted text then i get a blank where the page number symbol was.  how can
i do this and still keep the page numbering dynamic?

A few months ago I asked the assembled wisdom about using Mac II/IIx PAL
SIMMs in a IIci. I had gotten Leslye a C650 to replace her goosed II,
and I wanted to cannibalize as much as possible of the II before either
selling it or giving it to a good deductible home. I got a lot of answers
of varying stripes. I dropped a note to Connectix, those fine folk who
seem to know an indecent amount about Mac memory. They said the special
Program Array Logic SIMMs (no, not parity SIMMs) would work fine in my
IIci. This evening I finally had a chance to test that assertion.

With 16M SIMM prices back down to a relatively dull roar, I goosed the
C650 to 24M, Leslye is comfortable with the extra elbow room, and she
finally gave me leave to take the four 4M PAL SIMMs out of her II. Oh
frabjous day! Caloo! Calay! Or whatever.

Yup, those 4M PAL SIMMs work just fine. As long as you stick them in
Bank B (the one to the left as you look inside the box from the front).
I know that's Bank B because I tried it the other way first and got a
previously unheard chord upon attempted startup.

Now, if she'll just let me have the II's 205M HD....

I also have the same problem with my 100.  My plug doesn't make
contact unless there is pressure on the plug to push it down.  I
put a stiff rubber band around the cord and hooked it onto the
foot.  This pulls the cord down a little bit and power goes in just
fine.  Kind of a pain, but I can't imagine what it would cost to
get it fixed.

Incidently, early in my computer's life, it had a problem where it
would not work from the battery.  Apple replaced the daughter
board, and the mother board.  Unrelated to that, they later
replaced the hard drive (20mb).  So, I kind of got my share of free
labor.

Go to the top of the class young man - you're absolutely correct.
I had the same problem - the solder holding the jack to the mother-
board cracked.  Reflowing the solder was very easy, even with my
cheap and nasty soldering iron.
Now I'm always very careful using my PB so as not to wobble or put
any strain on the plug when it is inserted into the power jack -
using it "laptop" seems to cause the most problems.

Subject: powerbook 160/180 adb patch incompatibility

Bear with me,

    The other day, I downloaded the newest mousestick ii driver,
including the powerbook adb patch from advanced gravis' bbs.  I installed
it and then uploaded the driver to info-mac.  Then, at the same time, i
starting using my modem on my printer port (don't ask why, it's a long
story).  Anyways, to make an even longer story short, my modem was getting
continuous data crc errors when trying to download and i finally pinned it
down to a conflict with the adb patch included with the mousestick
driver(it was somehow causing data to be dropped).  so i called up advanced
gravis, and the guy i spoke to believed me after a long explanation and
told me to fax in a diagnostic report, which i did.  But, he was quick to
mention that it was apple's adb patch and not their's....so, i called up
1-800-sos-appl and talked to a friendly guy named dave...which also
believed me (after an even longer explanation) and said he would check on
it and call me back.  About 30 minutes later, he called back and
acknowledged the problem, but was quick to add that it was their patch, but
advanced gravis had PROBABLY done a few changes to it, so it was advanced
gravis' responsibility.

Well, to sum it up, i don't tell a very good story and if you are using the
adb patch with a powerbook 160, 165c, 165, 180, 180c. You will have
problems with your Printer port ONLY, but only with incoming data..get it?
No problems printing, or using outgoing data on a modem.  To avoid the
problem, you can remove the patch and go mousestick II-less or do what i
do, use the patch when you want to use the mousestick and remove it when
you don't.  If you don't use your powerbook's printer port with a modem or
serial connection that feeds data to your computer, then don't worry.

BTW, a get info showed copyright by Apple Computer 1993...and the patch
causes problems even when used with a copy of my disk tools disk with the
patch as the only init. Yes, a pram zap and eveything I could think of and
dave at apple told me to try wouldn't make it go away.

Well, given that a running motor vehicle will output from 13 to 14 volts on
its battery and that the PowerBook uses 7.5 volts on its adapter, you'll
only blow a fuse, at best. Of course, Murphy might be out to get you, and
you'll fry the whole motherboard. In the first case, you'll still be able
to run, but perpetually plugged into the regular Apple adapter. In the
second case, well... Either way, the machine will have to go back to the
dealer and get a new motherboard (fuse's soldered on, not user replaceable,
even if you can find it), and whatever's left of your warranty will go the
way of the dodo bird.

Seriously, folks, the PB adapter is not a cheap 120 -> 7.5 AC transformer !
It outputs fully regulated 7.5 VDC at up to 1.7 Amps and is capable of
sustaining a battery-less PB indefinitely. It is also capable of
self-destructing, rather than letting the PB suffer damage when harm comes
along (like a high-voltage spike on the line).

If you want long-term car operation, I'm certain there are 12V adapters
specifically for the PB on the market, costing roughly the same as an AC
adapter. On the other hand, trying to scrimp on $50-$70 and jeopardizing a
$2,000-$3,500 investment seems like a very dumb move to me.

This ain't hearsay, but actual experiences lived (suffered ?) by several of
our users. They're nice machines (got one myself), but they'll only take a
certain amount of abuse and fiddling around with the power supply is way
out of the line.

struck by how similar looking it was to the IIsi. Someone tell me I can

Dear Info-Mac'ers,
Can you suggest a software program to help me organize and write my book?

I know I don't want something like FileMaker Pro or HyperCard. Here's what
I do want:

A program that will store discrete units of data (a sentence to a page long)
that will let me use a "keyword" system to find and retrieve stored data,
that will let me shuffle the units around, and that will work with a word
processor so I can move the data into the text as I write.

Ideally, It should let me create a bibliography (most ideally using the
APA, University of Chicago or MLA format). In the best of possible worlds,
It would even accept and store scanned images.

If it makes a difference, I prefer to use MacWrite (but have access to
Microsoft Word and Write Now 3.0) under System 7.

Surely, others are writing books on their Macs. Please let me hear from
you.  As I'm not subscribed to the list, please respond to
[e-mail] -- I'll summarize if there is interest.

Subject: SCSI problems

   I am having problems with my SCSI chain.  On my Classic I have an
internal 80Mb hard drive.  Next on the SCSI chain I have a external
20MB hard drive.  The as the last item on my chain I have an external
CD-ROM drive.  The CD-ROM drive has internal termination which I can't
take out , the 20Mb drive did, but I took it out.  And then I have the
internal, which should be terminated.
   The problem I am having is that I can not boot up with the 80Mb
drive with out the 20Mb drive being turned on.  Is there a problem
with my termination?  Do I need some more terminators?
   Any help would be appreciated.  Please respond with e-mail.

Is there a way to search umich archives using a Gopher search?  I need to find
the directory path to the after dark modules there.  PLEASE E-MAIL your reply
as our server doesn't always update the digest.  Through some fluke we went 3
days without a single new digest.    I don't want to listserv either as it
takes too much out of my time to read every last digest bulletin.  I either
have to run it through my newsreader after downloading it, or read one by one
the subject headings of my interest.  Downloading takes time too even at 38400
BAUD throughput.

Hi Netters

I am wondering why is that I have to start my computer twice in order for me
to use the computer.

The first time I turn on the computer, I get the question mark asking for the
system software.  I have to turn the computer off, and restart again.  After
the second time, then the computer would recognize the internal hard drive,
but
never on the first time.

I can't figure it out why, but I suspect that it probably has to do with
the internal batterry.  I haven't changed it for at least four years.  Other
than that, does anyone have an idea what is wrong?

I have IIci.

p.s.  If the problem is the internal battery, is it possible to purchase
battery at any Apple authorized dealers?  or I need it replace by Apple
dealers
only.

Since I couldn't change the type of Symbionts to 'INIT' (the control panel
would just chaneg it back the next time around, I changed SAM from a 'cdev' to
a 'scri.'  SAM (preceded with two exclamations) now loads first, although I
haven't tried to see if I can still open the control panel.

Here's a poser for you.

I have two computers: an ancient 386 running SCO UNIX 3.2v4 (release
4.2) with the SCO TCP/IP 1.2 package, and a Powerbook 145b runnig
System 7.1, MacTCP 2.0.2, and MacPPP 2.0.

Right now the Mac connects to an IP provider via modem to pull in news
and mail. I want to write a better SMTP client in MacPerl, so I
obviously need to get the Mac talking to the UNIX box, using PPP
over a null-modem cable. MacPPP/MacTCP is fine for dialing into the
IP. The null-modem cable works fine with Kermit. TCP/IP is configured
correctly on the SCO box. All that remains is to get the two LAPs
talking to one another.

Now I could obtain and install InterSLIP on the Mac and use a direct
SLIP line. I have reasons for not wanting to do this, even thought it
would be relatively easy. (Only one SLIP connection to a SCO box;
InterSLIP takes 120K of memory from the Mac (!), and I may want to
scale up to a full-blown TCP/IP network over serial cable in the
indeterminate future). So what I want to know is, does anyone have any
ideas about configuring PPP for a direct serial connection? As far as
I can tell, it seems to _insist_ on talking to a modem. (I'm not
incredibly familiar with these protocols, and know next to nothing
about programming Macs, so I'm not qualified to delve deep into it
myself.) Moreover, I'd like to be able to dial _in_ to the powerbook

According to the documentation accluded with PowerScan 2.0 by Jonas
Wallden, other programs besides Disk Charmer (which is able to format
disks with backgrounding) exploit the Thread Manager: PowerScan itself
(although with cooperative threads, not preemptive), AutoCAD R12, and
... QuickDraw GX!

BTW, Disk Charmer is not by Alessandro Levi Montalcini (who has
written tons of useful utilities for the Mac, though), but by Fabrizio
Oddone.

I hate to be unable to provide specifics, but about four years ago, at my
former place of employment, we had a Mac IIcx with a video card (well,
actually they were two cards, piggyback connected), which allowed real-time
viewing of video, as well as adding Mac-generated effects, like subtitling
and such. The equipment was used in the multimedia lab, where it was
plugged to a pair of semi-pro video decks; you could tune in your favorite
program, add doodles with the Mac, and record it for posterity. Since that
wasn't my department, I just played with the toys now and then, and never
did pay much attention to brand names or model numbers.

Given that was in ancient times, given the advance of the technology, I
assume modern gear can do much more.

1) Buy more RAM. It's not too expensive to replace those 4 x 256k SIMMs
by 4 x 1M SIMMs. Maximum on an SE is 4M. To add RAM on "early" SE models,
you need to cut the resistor labeled R35; on newer models you need to
(re)move a jumper (remove it if there are 2.5 or 4M in it; move it if you
chose only to upgrade to 2M).

If you need literature, ask Connectix for "The Macintosh Memory Guide", a
60-page-booklet which answers most memory questions. They can be reached
electronically ( [e-mail] ) or by phone [phone] or
[phone].

2) Upgrade your system software to at least 6.0.5. If your harddisk is a
"normal" one, it should be possible to boot the computer from it (Just try
it out; System 6.0.5 should be available free from your Apple dealer or a
user group near you). You may need to re-initialize completely your
harddisk to make it bootable. Take any "universal" formatter (such as
Silverlining from LaCie, or Hard Disk Toolkit from FWB). If it's an
"Apple" labeled drive, you can use Apple's HD SC setup to do this. Keep in
mind that chosing "erase" from the "Special menu" does NOT do the same
thing.

I have a USR Courier V32bis Dual Standard modem which won't talk to my Mac at
anything above 19,200bps. Several other people have noticed the same
phenomenon.

Any ideas why this should be so, and does it slow down data transfer on
14,400bps connections? (I usually get transfer rates of 1400 cps and higher on
Fetch connections, so I guess the answer to the last question is no!)

Hi folks.  Just to remind people, version 4.09 of "The Player Pro"
by Antoine Rosset is out for the Mac.. it allows editing of
Amiga SoundTracker/ProTracker Music Module files, as well as
playing them.   Right now, the program has problems with pitch playback,
which will be corrected in version 4.10.   Version 4.11 will
(As Antione said) support other formats, such as Amiga OctaMED,
and possibly Oktalyzer and other 8 to 32 track music formats.

If you have any interest in music, check the program out!  it's
at the info-mac FTP site in snd/util.  Information on the
ProTracker file format is also available on sumex, in the files
"MOD-info" and "modform.txt".  (I forget where they are)
One details ProTracker format version 1, and the other talks
about version 2.

The program "Sound Trecker" version 2.0 is also out, at the same place.

I had this same problem.  I found that with any of the "newer" machines
the same thing happened to me (Mac SI, Centris 610, IIvx).  Finally I
was able to get my hard drive to mount by powering my hard drive and the
Mac at the same time (so when the mac recoginizes it's internal drive,
the external has not yet finished spinning up).  Then I can use SCSI Probe
to mount it.  Unfortunately, I don't know what the problem is either, but
it is NOT just a problem with the Quadra 605.

    Can anyone help me with this problem.  I have an ethertalk network
of Macs, LCIII's and Classic II's with some other stuff throughout the
biudling.  On this network is a LaserJet 4si mx.

    Printing has become very slow.  On the order of minutes for a one
page, seven line, document which uses only one font.  Could anybody offer
any suggestions as to why the performance is so slow?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.
